The Education System is Failing Nunavik Inuit

In 2018, the Québec Ombudsman issued a report on the educational system in Nunavik. She made the same observation across the board: students are falling behind in their education, which limits their post-secondary choices. The disparity between Nunavik and the rest of the province clearly indicates that there is a problem with the quality of the educational system and the services offered.

This stark difference in education levels cannot simply be blamed on geographical remoteness. By way of illustration, the graduation rate of students in the Kativik School Board district in Nunavik was 25.9% in 2015 and the dropout rate was 73.3%. Meanwhile, in the Magdalen Islands School Board district (a remote Quebec island in the Bay of Fundy), the graduation rate was 87%.
